Michigan Opera Theatre — now known as Detroit Opera — is the principal opera company of the Motor City, founded in 1971 by David DiChiera with a mission to enrich the cultural life of Detroit and southeastern Michigan. Performing at the magnificently restored Detroit Opera House, a 1922 Italian Renaissance jewel on Madison Avenue, the company presents a season of grand opera alongside innovative community programming. MOT has been a cornerstone of Detroit's cultural renaissance, drawing audiences downtown and championing diversity on the operatic stage.
