The National Theatre on London's South Bank is one of the world's great producing theatres, housing three distinct performance spaces — the Olivier, the Lyttelton, and the Dorfman — beneath Denys Lasdun's iconic Brutalist concrete exterior. Since its founding, the NT has premiered countless landmark productions that transfer to the West End and Broadway, shaping the trajectory of English-language theatre. Its NT Live programme, which broadcasts performances to cinemas worldwide, has fundamentally expanded the reach of British stage work to global audiences.
Acoustics, seating, and what to expect
The National Theatre comprises three distinct auditoria—the Olivier (fan-shaped, 1,150 seats), Lyttelton (proscenium arch, 890 seats), and Dorfman (flexible space)—each with different acoustic properties adapted to their respective configurations and production types.
Olivier Theatre: Central Stalls rows D-G or E-P offer optimal immersion and sightlines; avoid extreme side seats and very back rows. Lyttelton Theatre: Mid-Stalls central block rows D-L provide best proximity and clear views. Avoid seats 1, 2, 58, 59 in all rows as comparatively poor value.
