Once celebrated as "The People's Opera" for its mission to make opera accessible and affordable, New York City Opera launched the careers of countless American singers including Beverly Sills, Plácido Domingo, and Samuel Ramey. The company was long known for championing American works, premiering operas in English, and nurturing emerging talent at a time when the Metropolitan Opera across the Lincoln Center plaza focused on established stars. After a period of financial turmoil and bankruptcy, NYCO has sought to rebuild, carrying forward its founding populist spirit in a changed operatic landscape.
