Founded in 1934 by George Balanchine and Lincoln Kirstein, the School of American Ballet is the official academy of New York City Ballet and the most prestigious ballet school in the United States. Housed at Lincoln Center, SAB trains an elite cohort of young dancers in the Balanchine technique — a style characterized by speed, musicality, and neoclassical purity that has defined American ballet. Its annual Winter Ball and student workshop performances are landmark events in the dance calendar. Virtually every significant American ballet career of the past nine decades has passed through SAB's hallowed studios.
