Originally Henry Miller's Theatre when it opened in 1918 as Manhattan's first air-conditioned playhouse, the Stephen Sondheim Theatre was meticulously reconstructed in 2009 with its landmarked neo-Georgian facade preserved and integrated into a modern, mostly underground theater designed by COOKFOX architects. Renamed in 2010 to honor the legendary composer Stephen Sondheim, this 1,055-seat Broadway house operated by Roundabout Theatre Company earned distinction as the first LEED-certified theatre on Broadway, combining historic preservation with cutting-edge sustainable design and contemporary performance technology.
Acoustics, seating, and what to expect
The venue features a sophisticated acoustics system integrated into its modern design, optimized for Broadway musical and theatrical performances.
Orchestra center rows C through G offer ideal proximity without excessive closeness, while Center Mezzanine rows AA and BB provide excellent overhead sightlines particularly suited to musicals. Avoid corner and box seats due to potential sightline restrictions.
