The Walnut Street Theatre is the oldest continuously operating theater in the English-speaking world, having opened its doors in 1809 on what was then the cultural heart of Philadelphia. Its storied stage has hosted everyone from Edwin Forrest to the Barrymore family, and the building itself — a National Historic Landmark — exudes the layered history of over two centuries of American performance. Today the Walnut presents a popular season of musicals, comedies, and dramas that draws one of the largest subscription audiences of any regional theater in the country. It remains a living monument to the enduring power of live theater.
