Woolly Mammoth Theatre Company is Washington, D.C.'s most daring and politically provocative theatre company, dedicated to developing and producing new plays that challenge audiences and the art form. Founded in 1980, the company moved in 2005 to a purpose-built theatre on D Street in the Penn Quarter neighborhood, establishing itself as a national leader in adventurous new work.
Acoustics, seating, and what to expect
The intimate 265-seat courtyard design ensures no seat exceeds 120 feet from the stage, creating an immediate connection between performers and audience. The configuration prioritizes proximity and engagement over acoustic engineering.
The theater's intimate design ensures equitable sightlines throughout; no seat is significantly disadvantaged. Orchestra and lower balcony sections offer the most direct engagement with the stage.

2 dining
Go after midnight on a show night — the kitchen stays open late and the post-show crowd from the U Street music venues fills the counter. The chili cheese fries are a secondary rite of passage.
Reserve on show nights — the Kennedy Center proximity means it fills with artistic directors, donors, and visiting international performers. The fried chicken and house-made bourbon program are the standards. Brunch on Sundays is a DC institution.
Green Room — Washington DC
Housing, coaches, practice spaces, and wellness resources for working performers.
