Death and the King's Horseman

In colonial Nigeria, the king's horseman Elesin Oba is duty-bound to commit ritual suicide to accompany his dead king to the spirit world. The British District Officer intervenes to prevent the death, disrupting the cosmic order. When Elesin fails in his duty, his son Olunde takes his place, and the tragedy reveals the catastrophic consequences of colonial interference with Yoruba metaphysical tradition.
