Iphigénie, transported by the gods to the distant land of Tauris, serves as a priestess forced to sacrifice all strangers who land on the shore. When two captive Greeks are brought before her, she discovers one of them is her long-lost brother Oreste, tormented by the Furies for killing their mother. Iphigénie must find a way to save him before the savage King Thoas forces her hand. Gluck's greatest opera is a taut psychological drama of unbearable moral choices and family bonds that transcend fate.
