Jewels is a three-act abstract ballet that celebrates the beauty of precious gems through pure dance and music. Each act is a distinct jewel, each with its own character and aesthetic. The first act, Emeralds, set to Fauré's music, evokes the cool elegance and romantic grace of emeralds with lyrical, flowing movements. The second act, Rubies, dances to Stravinsky's Capriccio, capturing the passionate intensity and fiery brilliance of rubies through sharp, angular, and vibrant choreography. The final act, Diamonds, set to Tchaikovsky's Symphony No. 3, showcases the crystalline clarity and timeless splendor of diamonds with grand, classical movements and ethereal beauty. Throughout, Balanchine's neoclassical vocabulary transforms musical masterworks into visual spectacles of color, light, and human form.
