In a bleak Northern English mining town, the bullied schoolboy Billy Casper finds purpose and dignity in training a wild kestrel he names Kes. The hawk becomes his escape from a brutal home life, a dead-end school, and the coal mines that await him. When Billy's spiteful older brother Jud kills the bird in a fit of cruelty, Billy's one source of beauty and freedom is destroyed.
