Set in a Sicilian village on Easter morning, Cavalleria rusticana explores the violent passions and social codes of rural life. Turiddu, a young soldier, has returned from military service to find his former lover Lola now married to the wealthy Alfio. Consumed by wounded pride and desire, Turiddu seduces the innocent Santuzza, a peasant girl who loves him desperately. When Lola flaunts her affair with Turiddu, Santuzza—humiliated and abandoned—reveals the liaison to Alfio in a moment of vengeful anguish. The revelation ignites a code of honor that cannot be ignored. Alfio challenges Turiddu to a duel, and the young man, accepting his fate with grim resignation, bids farewell to his mother before departing to meet his rival. The opera culminates in offstage violence, leaving Santuzza's cries of anguish echoing through the village as the community realizes the tragic cost of passion and pride.
