A traveling commedia dell'arte troupe arrives in a Calabrian village on the Feast of the Assumption. Canio, the troupe's leader and performer of the clown role Pagliacci, discovers that his wife Nedda has been unfaithful with the young villager Silvio. Consumed by jealousy and rage, Canio struggles to maintain his theatrical composure as he prepares for an evening performance. During the play-within-the-play, the boundaries between art and reality dissolve catastrophically. Canio's scripted comedic role transforms into genuine tragedy as he confronts his wife's betrayal on stage, ultimately committing a violent act that shatters the distinction between performance and life. The opera explores the devastating collision between the mask of entertainment and the raw emotions of human suffering.
