Les Contes d'Hoffmann presents three interconnected tales of the poet E.T.A. Hoffmann's romantic misadventures, framed by a prologue and epilogue set in a tavern. In Venice, Hoffmann pursues the beautiful courtesan Giulietta, only to discover she is manipulating him for a rival's gain. In Nuremberg, he falls for Olympia, an exquisite mechanical doll created by the inventor Spalanzani, leading to humiliation when her true nature is revealed. In Munich, he loves the opera singer Antonia, whose father forbids their union fearing it will destroy her fragile health. Across each episode, the sinister Lindorf—a manifestation of dark fate—thwarts Hoffmann's hopes through various guises: as Coppelius the optician, Dapertutto the sorcerer, and Dr. Miracle the physician. The opera explores the tension between artistic idealism and harsh reality, as Hoffmann's romantic dreams repeatedly crumble against the machinations of fate and the corrupting forces of the material world.
