Seen through the eyes of young Alexander, a wealthy theatrical family's joyful Christmas celebration is shattered when his father dies and his mother remarries the austere Bishop Vergérus. The bishop's household is a prison of religious severity, and Alexander retreats into a world of imagination and supernatural visions. Based on Ingmar Bergman's autobiographical film, the opera explores childhood, cruelty, magic, and the redemptive power of art and family.
