The Pirates of Penzance follows Frederic, a young man who has just completed his apprenticeship to a pirate captain—a position he was placed in by mistake as a child. Bound by his sense of duty, Frederic resolves to leave the pirate crew and pursue an honest life. Upon arriving in Penzance, he falls in love with Mabel, the beautiful daughter of the Major-General. Their romance faces considerable obstacles: Frederic discovers he was born in a leap year and technically remains bound to his pirate apprenticeship until his twenty-first birthday, which won't occur for many years. Meanwhile, the pirate captain pursues Mabel, and the Major-General attempts to outwit the pirates through deception. The work brilliantly satirizes Victorian society, military incompetence, and the nature of duty itself, culminating in a resolution that subverts audience expectations while celebrating love and redemption.
