Rigoletto, a hunchbacked court jester, serves the licentious Duke of Mantua, whose seduction of women brings misery to the court. When the Duke pursues Gilda, Rigoletto's beloved daughter whom he has hidden away, the jester's protective fury ignites a tragic chain of events. Rigoletto conspires with the assassin Sparafucile to murder the Duke in revenge, but his plans unravel when Gilda, still devoted to her seducer, sacrifices herself to save him. The opera culminates in devastating irony as Rigoletto discovers his daughter's corpse instead of the Duke's, leaving him alone with his grief and the bitter knowledge that his scheming has destroyed the only person he loved.
