Madama Butterfly tells the poignant story of Cio-Cio-San, a young Japanese geisha who marries an American naval officer, Pinkerton, in a union she believes to be permanent and sacred. Pinkerton, however, views the marriage as a temporary arrangement and departs Japan, leaving Cio-Cio-San pregnant and alone. Years pass as she waits faithfully for his return, sustained by hope and the memory of their love. When Pinkerton finally returns to Japan, he brings with him his American wife, and Cio-Cio-San must confront the devastating reality that their marriage means nothing to him. Faced with the impossible choice between her son's future and her own honor, Cio-Cio-San makes a tragic sacrifice, choosing death over a life of shame and abandonment.
