La traviata follows the tragic romance between Violetta Valéry, a celebrated courtesan in Paris, and Alfredo Germont, a young gentleman of noble birth. When Alfredo declares his genuine love, Violetta abandons her dissolute life to be with him, and they retreat to the countryside for a brief period of domestic happiness. Their idyll shatters when Alfredo's father arrives, appealing to Violetta's sense of honor and family duty—her relationship with his son threatens the marriage prospects of Alfredo's sister. Torn between love and social obligation, Violetta returns to Paris and her former life of luxury. Alfredo, believing himself betrayed, publicly humiliates her at a gathering. Only when Violetta is dying of consumption does Alfredo learn the truth of her sacrifice. He rushes to her side, but arrives too late to save her. In her final moments, Violetta experiences a glimmer of hope before succumbing to her illness, taking with her the secret of her selfless devotion.
