
In sixteenth-century Russia, the oprichnik Gryaznoy is obsessively in love with the beautiful Marfa, who is betrothed to the merchant Lykov. Gryaznoy obtains a love potion, but the jealous Lyubasha secretly switches it for poison. When Tsar Ivan the Terrible chooses Marfa as his bride, the poisoned girl slowly wastes away, and the web of jealousy and deception destroys everyone involved.
