On the eve of Epiphany, a poor shepherd boy named Amahl encounters three kings traveling toward Bethlehem to visit the newborn Christ child. Though lame and skeptical, Amahl is drawn into their sacred journey when he learns of the miraculous infant they seek. As the kings rest at his humble home, Amahl's widowed mother initially attempts to steal their gold to ease their poverty, but is moved by the kings' spiritual purpose. Amahl offers his crutch as a gift to the Christ child, and in a moment of grace, he is healed and joins the kings on their pilgrimage. The opera celebrates themes of faith, redemption, and the transformative power of belief, unfolding through Menotti's lyrical melodies and intimate character moments that capture both the wonder and humanity of the Nativity story.
